Arnold Palmer will serve as honorary chairman for the seventh consecutive year.
The Jim Murray SilverRock Alumni Challenge will feature celebrities playing in groups with alumni from major colleges and universities across the nation in a three-day event that will be produced for television by Fourteenth Colony Productions and aired by Fox Sport West. This will be the first time college alums have a chance to form golf teams to play against other college alumni teams in a setting on television.
Some of the celebrities who have played in the past Murray events include Arnold Palmer, Chris McCarron, Bobby Rahal, James Woods, Elgin Baylor, James Worthy, Dennis Miller, Robert Wahl, Rick Dees and Rick Reilly. Celebrities for the 2005 tournament will be named at a later date.
After six years in the Los Angeles area, the Jim Murray Memorial Foundation (JMMF) has moved to La Quinta and has partnered with the International Golf Museum (IGM), who will produce the event. The IGM was established for the purpose of developing and running a permanent facility in the Coachella Valley to pay homage to the game of golf. The IGM will also feature a Jim Murray Golf Writers’ Wing.
The JMMF provides seven $5,000 scholarships annually to journalism students at top colleges and universities. In addition, the winning Alumni team will have the honor of having a $5,000 donation made to a university of its choice.
“We are happy to be associated with the Jim Murray Memorial Foundation and the International Golf Museum,” said La Quinta Mayor Don Adolph. “Jim Murray was a legend and a Pulitzer Prize winner and it is an honor for our fine city to be the title sponsor of an event that does so much for journalism students as well as junior golfers in the Coachella Valley. We believe our SilverRock Resort course will provide a dramatic setting for the event. It is a challenging course, yet fair for players of all abilities.”

“La Quinta is the golf capital of the world,” said Linda McCoy-Murray, the wife of the late Jim Murray. “I can’t imagine a better home for our tournament than the SilverRock Resort course which was designed by Arnold Palmer, who was Jim’s close friend. We had six great years in the Los Angeles area and now we are looking forward to a long association with the city of La Quinta.”

“We are extremely gratified to be a partner in this venture,” said IGM President John Peņa. “This is a perfect fit for us – a charity tournament that provides scholarships for journalism students working with an organization that is putting together junior golf educational programs.”

The Jim Murray SilverRock Alumni Challenge will consist of 36 four-person teams representing colleges and universities from across America competing over 36 holes in a best-ball format using current handicaps.
